'Shockingly Inadequate': Trump Sends Europe a Signal Regarding Ukraine.
US President's Advisor Mike Waltz noted that due to a national debt of 33 trillion dollars, the United States cannot continue to 'subsidize' European security. He stated in an interview with the New York Post that assistance to Ukraine should be provided under European leadership. Additionally, Waltz urged NATO member countries to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP.
According to the advisor, in 2014 NATO allies agreed to allocate at least 2% of GDP for defense. However, the average spending was only 2.71% of GDP. Some countries, such as Poland, Latvia, Romania, Denmark, and the United Kingdom, plan to increase defense spending to 3-5% of their GDP.
Waltz criticized the insufficient readiness of some allies to defend themselves. He noted that countries such as Spain, Canada, and Italy do not pay enough attention to security. The advisor also warned about the potential consequences of inadequate funding for naval forces, which could impact the economy.
