The USA retains leadership in global liquefied natural gas exports
The United States remains the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the global market with an export volume of 11.9 billion cubic feet per day, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).
Despite temporary difficulties at export terminals and decreased gas consumption in Europe, the USA managed to maintain export levels at previous rates. This was achieved through the launch of the new American LNG terminal Plaquemines LNG Phase 1 in December 2024.
European countries, including the Netherlands, France, and the United Kingdom, imported the most American LNG, receiving 46% of total European imports. Export rates to Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, India, and China also increased, accounting for 33% of total exports.
In 2024, Egypt became an importer of LNG from the USA for the first Time since 2018 due to domestic consumption exceeding available gas supplies. In Brazil and Colombia, imports of American LNG increased due to droughts that reduced hydroelectric power production and increased demand for gas-fired power plants.
Qatar and Australia ranked second and third in the global LNG exporter rankings. Russia and Malaysia occupy the fourth and fifth positions in the ranking. Overall, LNG exports from the USA to various regions have increased, growing in the Middle East, North Africa, and Latin America.
It is important to note that LNG import capacities in the European Union and the United Kingdom continue to grow. The launch of new regasification facilities in Croatia, Cyprus, and Italy will contribute to further increases in LNG imports in these regions by 2025.
