It is difficult for democratic countries to transition their economies to a war footing - German general.

The main coordinator of German military assistance to Ukraine, Major General Christopher Friedrich, stated that it is difficult for democratic countries to switch to a wartime economy if they are not in a state of war.
According to him, Germany is currently trying to increase its production capacities to enhance its defense capabilities. Discussions with the defense industry on this topic are already underway.
'We have doubled the production of air defense systems. We have also increased the production of artillery ammunition, but not enough,' the general noted.
Friedrich added that the main problem is that Germany's defense industry has always been geared toward peacetime and has reduced production capacities. He believes that changing this is quite difficult.
The general also emphasized that strengthening the country's defense capabilities does not require an 'external push', but there is a need to be active and able to protect oneself and NATO partners.
He also expressed the opinion that the defense budget will become one of the main topics of the upcoming election campaign in Germany if the government changes.
'I believe we will form a coalition with clear agreements, and the defense budget will become one of the main topics of such agreements,' Friedrich stated.
