On May 29, Ukrainians celebrate the Ascension of the Lord, which is always celebrated on the fortieth day after Easter, which always falls on a Thursday.

On this day, people go to church, visit relatives, and pray, thanking for everything, asking for help, health, well-being, and repenting of sins.

History of the Holiday

According to legend, Jesus Christ appeared to his disciples for 40 days after the Resurrection on Easter, and on the 40th day, he ascended to heaven before their eyes. This holiday symbolizes the transition of Jesus from earth to heaven, from the physical to the spiritual world. The next Christian holiday in 2025 is Trinity.

The traditional dishes of this holiday included ritual cookies in the shape of ladders, Easter cakes, and colored eggs. Peasants also walked around their fields with colored eggs, as at Ascension the ears begin to emerge. Folk celebrations are associated with the arrival of summer, spring, rounds, and festivities.
