German Chancellor Friedrich Merz played an important role in President Donald Trump's decision to transfer additional Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. This was made possible by Merz's willingness to finance the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine. According to information from The Wall Street Journal, Merz even offered to buy two Patriot systems from the U.S. and transfer them to Ukraine after Trump's disappointment with Putin and Russian aggression. Thus, the close cooperation and personal efforts of the German Chancellor helped convince the U.S. President to provide limited, but important, military support to Ukraine. After the agreement between Merz and Trump, the Patriot systems will soon arrive in Ukraine, and the possibility of supplying long-range JASSM missiles is also being considered.
