US Senators Propose Tough Sanctions Against Russia as a Guarantee for Peace Agreement for Ukraine - WP.

Two senators, Lindsey Graham from the Republican Party and Richard Blumenthal from the Democratic Party, have proposed a bill imposing sanctions on Russia due to its refusal to pursue a long-term peace with Ukraine.
According to The Washington Times, among the 50 co-sponsors of the bill in the Senate, the initiative has found support from both Republicans and Democrats.
'In the United States Senate, the prevailing opinion is that Russia is an aggressor and that this terrible military conflict and Putin's aggression must stop immediately and be deterred in the future,' the senators' joint statement noted.
The bill includes primary and secondary sanctions against Russia and individuals supporting the Kremlin's aggression against Ukraine. The restrictions will be applied in case of a breakdown in peace negotiations or Russia's violation of the agreement.
Specifically, the law may impose 500% tariffs on imported goods from countries buying Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other products.
This may provide some guarantee to President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has expressed a desire to ensure protection from Russian military invasion through the agreement.
'These sanctions against Russia are already prepared and will receive significant support from both parties if they are announced by a vote in the Senate and the House of Representatives,' the bill's authors reported.
In the document, the senators expressed hope that by 2025 President Trump and his team will 'achieve what the rest of the world could not: end the Russian aggression against Ukraine and ensure the survival of a free and democratic Ukraine.'
